Why Your Life Is Literally Slipping Through Your Fingers - And How To Get It Back...
By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
Freedom. A word that gets banded around a lot... do you have it? Would you say you have freedom? Freedom to live your life the way you want to?
Chances are, you're able to buy the things you want, live in a nice enough area, travel and go on holiday, but are you really free? Are you in control? Are you really living the life you really want to live?
Like most people, you probably own a smartphone (you might even be reading this article on one!) or at least a laptop. And chances are you're plugged into some sort of social media, and chances are, without even realising it, your time, your attention, your focus, your happiness, is getting chipped away at... one 'like', one 'post', one emoji at a time...
"Constantly comparing your life to someone else's creates envy, low confidence, low self-esteem and depression"
Check out this powerful video on the reality behind social media. It isn't comfortable, and it isn't nice, trust me I felt uncomfortable watching it too, but you won't regret it...
The Problem Is Not Just Social Media
Social media did not land on earth out of nowhere! We created it and we use it. Social media was born out of individuals and a society that is becoming far more reclusive, far more distant and far less affectionate - dare I say loving and caring for one another. Yes, there are some of these apps and sites that are designed to distract us, but the power will always lie in your hands...
So, how do you get to experience your life more without being a hermit who shuns all social media??
1. Unplug And Reconnect
This is probably the most obvious one, but start by taking some screen breaks, and more so, take some breaks from needing to being stimulated all the time. Put the phone or laptop away when you're eating. Turn off iTunes for a few minutes, and allow yourself even a few minutes each morning, or on your lunch break, to just breathe and slow down.
It's not just about unplugging from technology, but about reconnecting with yourself. Check out why these famous legends all swear by meditation as a foundational daily practice.
2. What is Important to You?
"Gadgets can interfere with medium to long-term goals". - Jordan Pieterson
One of the big issues here is distraction. We allow ourselves to be distracted because quite frankly we have nothing better to do. Or at least we don't realise that we actually DO have something better to do!
Have you ever taken the time to really sit with what is deeply important to you? What would you really love to achieve this year?
It could be losing weight, signing up for a marathon, finding your ideal partner, even starting your own business. But as they say in the video above, can you really achieve any of that while you're Snapchatting, Whatsapping, Facebooking, Instagramming and Youtubing before you've even got out of bed? (Yes, we've all done it!) 🙂
Give yourself one or two hours on the weekend to sit down and spend time focusing on what really counts to you. Once you're there, you can start building a plan, step by step.
3. Surround Yourself With People, Not Emojis!
Planning, let alone achieving those goals is never going to be easy. Especially when the lure and the temptation of social media, 24-hour news and what the latest celebrity is wearing are all one click away!
Instead of spending time looking at your ex-partner's holiday snaps, or your old schoolmate's photos of their kids, start connecting with... people!!
Look for places where you can meet and connect with like-minded, like-hearted people. Find out what they care about, what they want to do with their lives. Get yourself involved in a group of people who can help you achieve your important goals in life. Find yourself a mentor or a coach who can guide you along the path they've already walked, so they can help you stay on track when you fall off!
There are loads and loads of places to go too! Meetup, Eventbrite and TimeOut all showcase opportunities to connect with people.
Even the Legends Report team are connected to mentors, coaches, networks, events and lots more to help you live your life...
