Have you ever had a goal you wanted to achieve so badly, but felt that it just wouldn’t happen?

Well, the story of Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic can show you that nothing is beyond hope if you are willing to carry on working hard and dreaming harder. Goran's story is quite frankly the childhood fantasy that became a reality. Goran lost three Wimbledon finals; in 1992, 1994 and 1998 - with all matches going to the maximum of five sets! Imagine the heartbreak he would have felt - so close and yet so far. However, against all odds, he came back and won the 2001 final in one of the most amazing Wimbledon comeback stories ever...

In his own words, Goran felt “devastated, inconsolable and wanting to give up” after his 1998 defeat. He was ranked 125 in the world when he came to Wimbledon in 2001 and was a complete outsider to win. He didn’t even manage to qualify for the 2001 tournament, he was only there because he was given a wild card, (a place Wimbledon tennis officials award to players based on their previous contributions to the tournament or other special circumstances).

As this video shows, it was his belief and sheer will to continue as well as having powerful reasons that carried him through; not least the memory of his best friend who died in a car accident. It was incredibly moving after his victory in 2001 that he climbed up to the Royal Box to hug his father...

Persist Until You Succeed

Goran’s example shows what legends are made of. When all around them have given up or are criticising them for their failures, they continue to believe in themselves and their goals. They don’t let the inevitable negative thoughts take over their positive thoughts and feelings. They continually strive to develop their positive mindset as they know without their own self-belief, there is little hope of them achieving success.

Here's the thrilling edge-of-your-seat final game of that 2001 final...
