Simon Sinek - How You Can Start To Love Your Monday Mornings!
The 'Why' Man Who Wants To Change The World

A Simple But Vitally Important Question
If someone was to be asked WHAT they do for a living, no doubt they wouldn't struggle for an answer... And if they were to be asked HOW they do that, again, no doubt they could answer without too much trouble. However...
How well do you think most people could tell you WHY they do what they do - beyond the obvious reasons such as the need to earn an income? How about you, what would your answer be?
What's most important about asking ourselves WHY we do what we do, is not so much the answer itself, but how that answer makes us feel.
When we're doing something that's purposeful and meaningful to us it feels fulfilling. When we have powerful reasons behind the things we do, beyond the functional, we feel passionate, inspired and motivated. We feel alive and we love getting out of bed on a Monday morning... Yes, those people! We all know them and 9 times out of 10, they're the ones with a strong why.
When we do something mostly for survival reasons, like paying the rent and buying the things we need to live, we're not so much living, as just existing and that doesn't feel so good, especially if it continues for a long time.
Sooner or later, if that's the case, we're going to feel more and more dissatisfied and unhappy getting up each day...
The Story of Simon Sinek
That's exactly the story of the best-selling author and speaker, Simon Sinek.
Over a decade ago, Mr Sinek was someone with his own business and thought he had everything he was supposed to have and be doing in order to feel happy and fulfilled in his life. Yet, he felt completely the opposite... Why?
Because, as he shares in the video interview below, he knew what he did very well, and he knew how to do it, in fact, he did it very well, however... he didn't know why he was doing it anymore.
He realised the thing he was missing most from his life wasn't money, things, a person, a house, a car, or anything like that. What he was missing were strong and compelling reasons for the way he was spending most of his time... and what's another name for time? Life! His life was passing him by and there was no real purpose or meaning in.
And Mr Sinek is far from being alone in this experience too, Gallup polls since the year 2000 have been consistently showing that less than one-third of workers in the US are engaged in their work.
Which means the other two-thirds of people are either not engaged, or are actively disengaged from what they do in their career or business - every day!
Here's Mr Sinek sharing his story...
A Powerful Why Changes Everything
So, what difference would having a strong why make? Well, just imagine waking up on a Monday morning, in fact any morning, with the feeling you can't wait to be doing what you do. Imagine going to bed each night, excited about what you want to achieve the next day, not just once a week when the weekend comes and you know you will get to have a lie-in.
Imagine being someone who has an energy of passion about them; who can speak to others with enthusiasm about what they do and why they're doing it, someone with a strong sense of purpose and a vision for their lives. These are the kinds of people who inspire others around them and become leaders.
Other people want to be like them and learn from them and they're the kind of people who can bring others together behind a goal or mission. They're people who end up becoming leaders, quite naturally, because of how they feel and who they are.
Does this sound like the kind of person you'd like to be more of?... If so maybe it's...
Time To Make a Change?
If there's anything any of us become increasingly aware of over time, it's that none of us know just how much time we have left and how much of it's potentially being lost in something that, at the end of the day, doesn't really matter to us.
So if you find yourself sitting up in your chair and nodding away as you're reading this then you could be at the beginning of a very important discovery that could revolutionise your future.
Even if you're feeling even the slightest niggle of recognition from it, don't underestimate what that could mean.
Where To Begin?
What matters most from here is DOING something about it and not just ignoring it. It might just be something your future self is forever grateful for! 😉
As Mr Sinek says - start with why! Start by questioning what it is that motivates you to get up and leave your home every day and how valuable and important that is to you.
Here's an easy exercise that can give you an idea as to where you currently are. Read the statements below and give yourself a mark out of 10 as to how true they are for you (10 being very true)
- I would do what I currently do for a living, even if I didn't get paid
- I could talk for hours about what my work means to me
- I'm proud of the fact I am following my dream
- I have a strong sense of purpose, drive and focus in my life
- Monday blues don't exist for me!
Looking at your scores for each of the above, answer these questions to give yourself some direction:
a) Where do you ideally want these scores to be: 1 year from now, and 5 years from now?
b) What one thing can you change that would make the biggest improvement towards that?
c) How can you make this happen and what help do you need?
If you'd value any help or guidance finding or even strengthening your whys, then please don't hesitate to get in touch via email here...
And one more thing...
Not having a strong why is very common. Have fun with this! Discovering and developing our whys is an exciting journey that can only lead to more and more of what we really want in life. Enjoy!
