Pep Guardiola - Sporting Managers & The Keys Behind Their Success

By Shaun Cooper, Director & Senior Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International

It’s difficult to name current managers who are more respected on the global football scene than Pep Guardiola. He's managed football giants like FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and presently Manchester City. He’s won numerous trophies as a player and certainly as a manager. So there are some incredible lessons we can take away from him and apply in our own lives, careers and business. Here are some insights into some of the fundamentals behind his success:

1. Strong Focus On Personal Relationships & Making His Players Feel Loved

Making his players feel loved and building personal relationships is a big part of his success blueprint. Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Holberg once said, “Pep is like a second father to me.” The value he places on people and his relationships is an exemplary quality in many legends. No man is greater than his team.

2. Preparation

As the adage goes, failing to plan is preparing to fail. Mr. Guardiola is considered obsessive about being prepared. He has been known to do extensive research into his opponents, cutting out distractions and looking over video footage over and over again in his bunker at the Nou Camp.

3. Learning From Legends

He has an insatiable hunger to learn about anything that is relevant to football and is well known in footballing circles for his love of learning. One example is when he travelled hundreds of kilometres to personally meet Argentinian volleyball coach Julio Velasco because he wanted to learn from him. Another example is when he met one of the greatest chess players of all time, Garry Kasparov to learn from the man and explore the parallels between chess and football. What better way to learn than that from legends!

4. Constantly Questioning Himself & Being Open To Critiscm

Mr. Guardiola has an incredible conviction in his ideas and methods and that’s because he’s constantly challenging them to be the best rather than him being right. He’s constantly challenging himself and his thinking:

“You can criticise me as much as you like. You’ll never be as critical of me as I am of myself.”

These qualities are not unique to Mr. Guardiola but are key qualities that can be observed in many legends. To really appreciate these qualities, look at the opposite of them and I’m sure you’ll agree that these qualities are key to succeed in any endeavour.
