Oprah Winfrey Gives Rousing Speech At Golden Globes!

Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes awards on Sunday night and used her acceptance speech to urge for greater positive change in society. Off the back of it, many have urged her to run for President. In particular, the speech included comments on press freedom, racial injustice and sexual harassment in light of the Harvey Weinstein allegations that engulfed Hollywood last year. These allegations have had a snowball effect where many more women have come forward in different industries to say they have been sexually harassed. Oprah said:
“So I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue. They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military.”
Oprah Winfrey is now said to be seriously considering running for President of the United States in 2020. While in the past it has been said she was reticent about getting too actively involved in politics. It's clear that she feels enough is enough and wants to do something more than she currently is. Ultimately, while we may not have the money, influence and power that Oprah Winfrey now has, as she says, we can still ask ourselves what more of a difference we could be making in our own day-to-day lives in areas where we need the courage to speak up.
