To win a Formula 1 world championship you need a lot of support in many different areas and from people who can guide you along the way. One such person who has mentored several world champions is Ron Dennis. Not many people have heard about him in comparison to how many have heard about those he has mentored, but Dennis was instrumental in nurturing the 11 year old Lewis Hamilton through his motor racing career and ultimately helped him become the double world champion he is today.

Dennis - also the CEO, chairman and founder of the McLaren Technology Group, which houses the Formula 1 team, also mentored Ayrton Senna, widely regarded as one of, if not the best racing driver ever. This is just one piece of advice that Dennis shared with Ayrton...

"If you are true to your values, if you believe that your values are correct values, then walking away from the dark forces you are faced with in life, just doesn't become an option."

When we are secure in the knowledge of what we truly stand for, we can face challenging situations head on without running away when it gets hard. This requires tremendous strength of character and discipline but it's something that all true legends have and is crucial to develop in ourselves. Mentoring is often a legitimate shortcut to this.

Legends know that mentoring is essential to really get ahead in life and when you look at successful people, time and time again you will see they had the right support around them to achieve their goals.

What would you say is the most important thing in your life and it can’t be a person or a thing?

Perhaps values like fairness, love, kindness?
