Eckhart Tolle - How To Quieten The Voices In Your Head

In this short video interview of author Eckhart Tolle by Oprah Winfrey, he answers a question posed by a viewer, about how to stop the mind from thinking too much. If you've ever experienced a feeling of being constantly pushed, shoved, cajoled and forced from one thing to the next by your own thoughts, then this is what we are talking about!

Eckhart Tolle talks about noticing the feeling in our hands, and then the rest of our bodies. This starts the process of slowing down our thoughts, because our attention is no longer 100% on the problems that the mind is thinking about. As he says in his book The Power of Now;

"The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly - you usually don't use it at all. It uses you. You believe that you are your mind. The instrument has taken you over.

Let me ask you this; can you be free of your mind wherever you want to? Have you found the 'off ' button?"

All the things that we have looked at so far from the book The Power of Now, namely controlling our breathing, watching our anxiety and the discipline that lead to happiness and fulfillment, all relate to how we are able to control the thoughts that are running constantly through our minds every day. Once we can start to separate ourselves from these thoughts, then we can begin to experience the vast realm that is beyond thought where beauty, love, creativity, joy and peace can be found.
