The Surprising Thing Bill Murray Wants But Doesn't Have
By Kris Deichler, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International
“This is not a dress rehearsal - this is your life.”
- Bill Murray
Have you ever caught yourself staring into the fridge and wondered why? Or realised in mid-conversation with somebody that you haven’t heard anything they’ve just said, but were politely nodding along anyway? I know I have. In fact we all do things like this, all the time.
Isn’t that normal though, and what’s it got to do with legendary actor and comedian Bill Murray you might ask!? Well, when Bill was questioned what he wants most in his life, after an award-winning career spanning more than 40 years in show business, you might be a bit surprised at his answer…
Being Present - Gaining Control of Our Minds
Did you watch the whole video? Or did you get distracted through it? What Bill is talking about is the ability to direct and control our attention; to stay here, right now, focused and aware of what is really happening and experiencing it fully. How much do we really taste what we are eating, listen properly to what someone is saying, or genuinely appreciate what we are looking at and how much do we miss? With busy minds we can get so distracted by our thoughts and constantly lose focus and life starts passing us by. If you look at young children, they are almost completely in the moment.
It’s no wonder that the older we get, the more precious our time and experience becomes. But why wait! We can change this! Something many legends use to be more ‘present’ and aware of the moment is meditation because it calms the mind and increases awareness. It can have some amazing positive effects on us health-wise too.
