Avoid The Mistakes of 2016... By Learning From Them!
By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner, Lighthouse International
Are you going to step into the new year with regrets and grudges from the past, or ready to start anew having learned from the past?
"Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them."
- Bruce Lee
Here's a 30 second exercise you can try right now, which will tell you everything you need to know about 2017.
When you look back at 2016, what do you feel? How would you sum it up?
Literally, right now, take 30 seconds to write or type the first 5 words that come to you when you think about the year.
What do you see? Appreciation? Disappointment? Regret? Excitement?
Now, when you really think about it, are there moments of regret, moments where you felt things just went totally wrong? Moments you'd rather just not remember?
"The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either."
- Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones
The thing about going into a new year and starting afresh is, how do you know you aren't going to repeat the same mistakes you made this year? How do you know you aren't going to fall victim to the same traps that are just dressed up differently? It could have been a colleague in 2016 that you hurt or they hurt you, and in 2017 it might be your partner - however, it might be the same underlying issue you haven't seen!
What if I told you that the real key to making 2017 the best year ever, is not in how amazing or challenging your goals are. Not how detailed your plan is. Not how motivated you are about them. But the real key lies in seeing the nuggets of wisdom that are waiting for you, back in 2016...
What if, not only could you succeed because of what you learned from 2016... but what if your lessons could change the life of someone else, so they didn't have to make those same mistakes? Wouldn't that be worth it? Would that 'mistake' be so bad then?
Earlier this year, Barack Obama spoke about how he was forgiven for his mistakes as a youngster.
Motivational Speaker Steve Harvey spoke about the nightmare scenario he had earlier this year when announcing the wrong contestant to win Miss Universe, and what he learnt from the experience. His attitude is brilliant.
I'd strongly recommend checking out both those short video clips before you check out these questions below!
NOTE! Over 90% of people will not even ask, let alone answer these questions! By just taking 5 minutes to answer these questions, you will give yourself an advantage that most people don't have!
How To Apply This!
Here are 5 important and empowering questions that if used well, will really help you fly into 2017...
- Think back on the year... is there an occasion where you made a mistake? You know, one where you just wanted the whole world to swallow you up?
- What key lesson could you learn from it that will help you become a better person in 2017?
- Think for a few moments... if you could go back in time to that situation, what would you do differently?
- What would this year be like if you implement this change?
- What one thing can you do to take action today? Never leave the scene of a life-changing decision without taking action!
How did you find that? Now that you've done it once, you can do it over and over with anything else that happened this year - even your successes and achievements!
