Petra Kvitova is one of the best tennis players in the world and is a two-time Wimbledon champion. Almost a year ago, however, she was attacked in her own home. Not only was she attacked with a knife, but her hand was cut badly, resulting in an injury that even her surgeon thought she would not be able to recover from in order to play tennis again.

However, Ms Kvitova defied such doubts to return to tennis this year. Furthermore not only did she play again, she expressed in a recent interview how the attack has helped her to appreciate tennis and her life outside of tennis even more:

"For tennis and for life, it’s good. I’ve done everything that I could but there is still some space to improve it. I hope that with more time I will be even stronger. I am happy that [throughout the recovery] I was always looking forward to the better tomorrows. If I wasn’t playing tennis I don’t think I could be as positive as I am now – but it’s not pleasant to see those flashbacks. It is a time that I try to forget but I know I will never really forget what happened. This experience has shown me how hard I can work if I need to and just how much of a fighter I am on and off the court...“I did hear the rumours that I would never ever play again but I thought: ‘I will show them,”

Ms Kvitova provides a heartwarming and inspiring example of finding the meaning in a horrific event. Clearly, she is still traumatised by it but is working hard to find the meaning in it to help her appreciate the most important things in life. She has summoned the motivation to work hard physically and emotionally to get back to the top level through her love of tennis and prove her doubters wrong. Being able to find meaning in trauma and learn from it is a trait many people who thrive in life has. As the old saying goes, "it's not what happens to us that counts, it's how we use it." To read more on this story click here...
