66 Million Trees In 1 Day | Hyperloop One Conducts First Full Test | The Top 10 Companies Engineers Want To Work In

Recently, India has broken the world record for the number of trees planted in one day, while the next generation of transport, the Hyperloop, takes a big step closer to completion. We also learn who the top 5 engineering companies to work for are.

India Plants 66 Million Trees - In 1 Day

India is a big country and when its citizens get organised, incredible things can happen. The 66 million trees were planted by volunteers in the Indian district of Madhya Pradesh and broke the 2016 record set in India of 50 million planted in a single day.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister, said in a tweet;

"By planting trees we are not only serving Madhya Pradesh but the world at large"

It is the actions of individuals that add up to create a massive change, and with trees forming a massive habitat for wild animals as well as being a large carbon sink for CO2 greenhouse gas, planting on this scale can only help. In fact, India, under the Paris Accord, is committed to covering 12% of its land in trees in the next few years. Legendary things happen, when enough people (1.5 million in this case) have the same goal and share the same values.

What would you do with 1.5 million people ready to make a difference? Comment at the bottom of this page, I would love to hear your answers!

Hyperloop One Conducts First Full Test

By Tom Hasker, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International

Hyperloop One is now leading the charge to bring Elon Musk's Hyperloop idea into reality. The Hyperloop is a system that uses a 'pod' vehicle inside a tube with the air inside it evacuated, reducing drag on the moving pod. (Think underground train, with no air in the tunnel.)

This test is significant because there are several systems all being tested at once to make sure they all work together. Not only the tube with reduced air in it, but also the magnetic levitation system to lift the pod off its rails and a linear electric motor (a sort of electric catapult) that fires the pod through the tube. Getting all this to work, work well and do it first is the challenge for the Hyperloop One team and in the video below you can see the results!

Mr Musk is not pursuing this idea directly as he has commitments elsewhere, but making the idea open for other people to explore means that the best solution will naturally evolve through competition. Finding the right combination of people and resources to build a Hyperloop team - or any company - is in his words below 'like baking a cake'.

The Top 10 Companies Engineers Want To Work In

By Tom Hasker, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International

When it comes to earning a crust, 23% of engineers want to work in the “software, computer services, multimedia development, digital entertainment” sector according to research company Universum Global. The company researched over 150,000 engineering students in 12 countries and the top 5 companies they want to work for are;

  1. Google
  2. Microsoft
  3. Apple
  4. General Electric
  5. BMW

An article on the Forbes website explains the differences between engineering and business student aims;

"Compared with business students, engineering students aren’t nearly as keen on professional services firms. Engineering students also seem to care less about money than business students. Their top career preference is to work on innovation, while business students think high future earnings are more important."

Considering GE and BMW were founded in 1892 and 1916 respectively, almost 60 years before Microsoft (in 1975, Google in 1998 and Apple 1976) to see them still in the top 5 says something about their character and company values. Enduring companies know how to attract the people with the right vision and character themselves to add to create a meaningful difference in the world.
