Becoming a Master of Time Management: Figuring Out What's Really Important To You

By Sukh Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International

"Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least."

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, writer and statesman

Everything. Everything is important. Everything is urgent. Everything is happening all the time and everything needs dealing with. Everything needs to get done. If something doesn't get done, then it's a disaster. If you thought the thing you're working on was important, just wait until that new task comes along which is EVEN MORE important.... and EVEN MORE urgent!

What if there was a different way?

Figuring Out The Important Things In Life...

“It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials.”

- Bruce Lee

Recently we featured an article on how the late U.S. President Eisenhower developed a system for dealing with the important things he needed to do. Following on from that, I wanted to provide a simple exercise to help you figure out and put more attention on the important things in life, and not get swept up by the urgent things. This isn't a silver bullet by any means, but can be a great help to get things going...

    1. Take a step back from your job, or your business or studies for a moment... take a few seconds to just slow down and ask yourself, what are the 3 most important things to you in your life? (It could be your family, your faith, your own personal growth, your health or something else). They don't have to be in order.

Share privately with your introducer below.....

    2. Which of these areas do you feel like you're making the least progress in? i.e. You experience more struggle, you find things more difficult and you see more urgent challenges coming up.

    3. Now in that area. How much time and energy do you invest in it on a scale of 1-10? 1 being a tiny portion and 10 being absolute dedication to looking after it?

    4. What would you like that number to be and why?

    5. Now, if there was just one thing you could do, that if you did it on a regular basis, would transform your experience of that one area, what would it be? (i.e. meditation, a date with a family member, exercise).

    6. One final would that feel to make that one change and transform that area of your life?

Feel free to try these questions again, addressing other important areas of your life. If you would like to speak with a mentorship coach about applying that change and making it happen, we'd be happy to speak with you, just let us know and one of the team will be in touch...

Yes I'd love to speak with someone about getting help to do this!No thank you
