Where Does Jeff Bezos Want To Be When He's 80?
By James Mills, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
Jeff Bezos is not only the billionaire founder of Amazon, but also heavily involved in the expansion of the private space travel industry, through his company 'Blue Origin'. Last September he was awarded the Henlein Prize by the spaceflight community for his contribution to space exploration. In a report of the award ceremony he shared his vision for where he wants to be in the next 30 or so years.
"If I’m 80 years old and I’m looking back on my life, and I can say that I put in place, with the help of the teammates at Blue Origin, the heavy-lifting infrastructure that made access to space cheap and inexpensive, so that the next generation could have the entrepreneurial explosion, like I saw on the internet, I’ll be a very happy 80-year-old."
Jeff Bezos has a pioneering spirit that has not only enabled him to grow Amazon into a global business, but now means he is making breakthroughs in an industry made up of fellow pioneers, like Elon Musk and Richard Branson. So, what is it that enables him to make strides in an industry full of risk and uncertainty?
Creating a Compelling Vision
Mr Bezos is able to articulate a vision for how he sees his future and take steps towards that on a daily basis, because of his connection to his imagination and creativity. As human beings we all have the ability to imagine and be creative - we only have to look at children to see that! Legends are those who invest the time to nurture these abilities. We may not want to become space explorers, but if we want to create exceptional lives, then we need to build clear visions for our lives through adopting a pioneering spirit.
