How Amy Purdy's Life Started After Losing Her Legs!!!
By Jatinder Singh, Associate Partner & Mentorship Coach, Lighthouse International
Amy Purdy is an American actress, model, world-class snowboarder, motivational speaker and 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist. At age 19, she contracted a form of meningitis which led to both of her legs having to be amputated below the knee. She lost both kidneys, and her spleen had to be removed. Doctors gave her only a 2% chance to survive!
However, she fought back to thrive. In the video below, she explains the thought process that she went through while in hospital that ensured she would not let her illness define the life she wanted to lead.
"When I lost my legs, one of the toughest periods was standing up on my prosthetic legs because they were so painful....I thought how am I ever going to live the life of my dreams? How will I ever travel the world, how will I ever snowboard again? ...I was mentally, emotionally and physically broken. I got tired of being tired. It was that moment that led me to ask a question, "If my life was a book - how do I want the story to go?"...I saw myself snowboarding, I visualised it so powerfully...I didn't know how I was going to do it but I knew I was going to do it."
Amy Purdy provides an amazing and powerful example of a legend who didn't let the odds beat her. Despite being in what many would regard as one of the toughest situations possible, she chose how she wanted to respond to the situation. She then spent all her energy on focusing on the outcome she wanted by putting all her emotional attention on it. This is a great example of using the fundamental habit of "Begin With the End in Mind" which as the name suggests, is thinking and feeling on the desired outcome and then working out how to achieve that later.
